HOW IT WORKS

The SCI Mountain Challenge, now in its third season, is a biennial fundraising event providing teams of competitors with the opportunity to push their physical limits in support of mariners who face extreme conditions every day to keep our modern way of life afloat.

This year’s event runs from September 28 to October 1, 2017. Competitors race a course that includes both hiking and paddling through the beautiful Sunday River area of Western Maine. Course times, plus philanthropy dollars raised, contribute to a team’s overall ranking and awards.

Are you up to the Challenge?

YOUR TEAM

Teams consist of three (3) people who start and finish the race together. Because you must stay together on the course and finish the race within 100 yards of each other, you may wish to build a team made up of individuals with similar physical/athletic abilities. The 2017 SCI Mountain Challenge features Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) course options. All three team members must choose the same course level. SCI welcomes all individuals—regardless of athletic ability—to participate.

PHILANTHROPY CHALLENGE

In addition to the physical competition, SCI challenge participants to raise funds and awareness for the Institute and its mariner support services. Each team is encouraged to raise at least $3,000. The funds raised by each team count towards the overall team rankings and awards. Final standings are calculated based on course times AND money raised.

VARSITY & JV COURSE OPTIONS

Participants may choose one of two levels of competition: Varsity or Junior Varsity (JV). The two levels vary in physical demands due to course mileage and elevation intensity. Varsity teams take on the toughest route each day, while JV teams travel a shorter but still significantly challenging course with less overall elevation. You and your teammates should review the detailed course information, and we encourage you to decide which of the two your team will do —Varsity or JV—prior to the start of the 2017 SCI Mountain Challenge.

Every team starts out on the same course. There will be a “cut-off point/time” on Race Day One for the teams that choose the Varsity Course option. If your team reaches that point before the cut-off time, your team must continue on the Varsity Course. If your team reaches the point after the cut-off time, your team will be required to complete the JV Course. Please see the COURSE INFORMATION section for additional details.

Race officials will provide an “abandon ship” point for those who find the Varsity or JV Courses too difficult, allowing competitors to come off the mountain or the river and stop competing for that day.
